新材料及进制造业驱动发展大同市左云县是山西省重点煤炭能源大县，目前以煤炭产业为主的工业经济在全县三次产业中仍占较大份额。
近年来，左云县依托当地的煤炭资源禀赋，不断延伸煤炭相关产业链的发展，致力于打造晋北装备制造和新材料制造基地。在装备制造产业方面，左云县装备制造产业链以投资6.5亿元的耀邦专用汽车及环卫装备制造项目为“链主”企业，延伸了美雅途自行车电动车制造、大同亿诚年产1万台套智能机械设备生产、西安捷马废旧机动车回收利用、鲁艺机械新型托辊制造等5个项目。
今年2月，左云县与中煤北京煤矿机械有限责任公司举行煤机装备制造项目战略合作协议签约仪式，后续双方将共同推动左云县煤机装备制造业的发展。在新材料产业方面，左云县依托现有1600万吨优质活性炭原料煤资源和14家煤质活性炭企业16万吨产能优势，以大同鹊盛活性炭有限公司（以下简称“鹊盛”)为龙头，引进关联企业，拓展滤水、滤气、医药食品等领域高端活性炭产业链，研创更多高端产品，开拓国内外销售渠道。
鹊盛公司鹊盛是目前国内规模最大的煤基活性炭生产企业，也是全世界单体最大的活性炭企业，公司可实现年产值7亿元以上，实现利润7900多万元。此次，左云经开区2000吨纳米晶软磁二期生产项目的投产，将增强左云县新材料产业的规模，吸引更多纳米晶软磁相关产业链企业入驻左云经开区，加快当地产业经济转型升级。
